What is a blood clot?
A blood clot is a clump of blood that forms when your blood changes from a liquid to a gel-like state. Clotting is an important part of how your body stops bleeding after an injury.
But sometimes a blood clot forms when it isn’t needed or doesn’t break down properly. A clot that blocks blood flow can be dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening.
Why should I care?
Blood clots can happen to anyone, at any age. They can develop in veins or arteries and may occur without obvious warning signs.
A blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg, is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If part of the clot breaks away and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be life-threatening.
The good news is that many blood clots can be prevented or treated. Knowing the signs and symptoms, understanding your risk and getting medical help when you need it can save lives.

World Thrombosis Day is a campaign of the ISTH
World Thrombosis Day is a campaign of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), the leading international medical and scientific organization dedicated to the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis and hemostasis conditions. Founded by ISTH in 2014, World Thrombosis Day is observed every October 13 and unites more than 12,000 partner organizations across 190+ countries to raise awareness of blood clots, a condition that contributes to 1 in 4 deaths worldwide each year.
